I thought this was fine. I am really starting to think that I have a different taste than the Booker Prize judges. I think I saw some of the symbolism, etc. but I wasn't blown away. I also found the end hard to believe.
If it's okay to be a transvestite then its okay for a transvestite to be one. What's not okay is to be a racist.
