I enjoyed the second half much more than the first. It was really slow going with way too much set up. Also, a highly unlikeable protagonist. In fact, I didn't like the protagonist, his wife, or his girlfriend. I did enjoy his lawyer (Raymond?) and would read more with him.
While not as bad as The Confession (DNFed in 2024[@rev]), there was a certainly political "bent" towards the writing around false convictions. I agree with the author's point but also felt it was a bit heavy-handed.
